Song & Memory :: Mohammed Naseehu Ali

Mohammed Naseehu Ali
“Kyenkyen Bi Adi Mawu” by Alhaki K. Frimpong and his Cubano Fiesta
Mohammed Naseehu Ali is a native of Ghana. He is the son of the emir, or king, of the Muslims in that African nation. Unlike his brothers and cousins, Mohammed left Ghana to be educated in the United States. Instead of returning to tribal politics, he became a musician and writer. But he hasn’t left behind the memories of a song so important to his childhood in Ghana: “Kyenkyen Bi Adi Mawu” by Alhaki K. Frimpong and his Cubano Fiesta.

Dear Ms Heppermann and Oehler,
I have been working with Mr. Evans Hunter of the Ga District of Ghana. Mr. Hunter has been operating a community media centre called Culture in the Neighborhood in his city for a number of years. He was recently granted a license and frequency to begin operating a community radio station as part of the media centre. While not working for the community, Mr. Hunter is a well known actor in Ghana.
The radio station’s name is radio Daetsrifa, meaning “going back to our roots” and it operates at a frequency of 105.1. The station’s focus is on health needs, agriculture, education and the arts. As you might expect we are struggling with financing the project and the operational issues of broadcasting. In addition, there is a need for quality content to broadcast.
Recently I stumbled across an article by Mr. Mohammed Naseehu Ali in the New York Times. He caught my attention because he from Ghana and he studied at Interlochen, which is close to my town. Subsequently I have read additional articles by him and excerpts from his book “The Prophet of Zongo Street”.
If Mr. Ali would be willing to communicate with me concerning a collaboration, in the form of content, between himself and Radio Daetsrifa, Mr. Hunter and myself would be most grateful. To that end, would you be willing to forward Mr. Ali this message and my email address?
Thank you for your consideration and assistance.
Best Regards,
Robert J. Heys
